Epilepsy and an intellectual disability?
An intellectual disability can be caused by a hereditary disorder in the brain, by problems during the pregnancy or by problems during or after birth. Whatever the cause, a brain disorder increases the chance of epilepsy. The more serious the intellectual disability, the more often epilepsy occurs. Yet, not all people with a intellectual disability suffer from epileptic seizures. Apparently not all brain disorders cause epilepsy. Children may not get serious epileptic seizures until a later point in time. The epilepsy can cause the child’s development to stagnate or even decline.
